TEM29: Peter Seymour of PROJECT Trio on energy in your presentation, taking action and the need to be brutally honest with yourself about what you can and can not do
Peter Seymour is the bass player and manager for PROJECT Trio, the internationally touring trio featuring bass, cello and flute. Peter has had a fascinating path through the music business that has evolved from playing with the Cleveland Orchestra to forming PROJECT Trio.
Peter and I became dear friends when we met as participants at the National Orchestral Institute back in 1999. He is not just a phenomenal musician. He also has more drive and energy than just about anyone I have ever met. This is both obvious and contagious in this interview.
This one will fire you up to take action rather than sit around and hone your plans some more. It sure had that effect on me.
Topics Covered:
Why losing the audition after having a one-year position with the Cleveland Orchestra was a blessing in disguise
How having a video go viral was both a blessing and a curse
Why it was lucky they couldn't find anything at all written for anything close to their instrumentation
How the common thread of successful groups today is energy in their presentations
How he put together a database of every single venue that PROJECT Trio could ever possibly perform in before they had ever played a single gig
The four word tag line he used to perfectly describe PROJECT Trio before anyone hiring had ever heard a note
How the key to their early success was taking action
The pluses and minuses of having management
The need to be brutally honest about what everyone can and can't do

Favorite Quote from the Interview:
"Practicing is all just working your ass off and solving problems, and I started doing that nine years ago for the trio."
